Millennials of today value a flexible work schedule over a fixed 9 to 5 job. Recent studies, including a prominent one from Bentley University, have revealed that millennials believe that flexible work timings would lead to an increase in productivity. This can be attributed to several aspects of the modern work environment. Here are some reasons why Millennials will insist for flexible work timings.

Change in sleeping pattern

Millennials are essentially owls, in terms of their sleeping patterns. From pulling all-nighters to meet deadlines, to staying up at night to socialise, it is evident that their brains function more sharply at night as opposed to during the day. This peculiar sleep pattern is meant to be accommodated by the flexibility of one’s work schedule.

Impact on work environment

The reason why this would not pose much of a threat to a wholesome work environment is because most of today’s work spaces are contingent on technology, which provides for all the accommodation required by millennials to suit their lifestyle. Being a tech-friendly generation gives them the benefit of being able to telecommute, to work from home or even reduce the burden of work by using technology as a medium. Corporations are no longer bound by the four walls of an office, and with the technologically dominated world we live in today, it is easy to work outside of the physical workplace, thereby contributing to the argument that flexible work hours are an effortlessly attainable goal. There has also been an increase in the freelance market, which can be accommodated by people working on their own time.

Take on the previous generation

Previous generations may have lacked opportunities; perhaps in the workplace, or even in terms of their personal lives. Having uninhibited freedom on work timings allows one to interact more with their families, thereby helping achieve a seamless work – family balance. This also proves to be an advantage for people to explore their lives outside the workplace, and not restraining their ability to lead the adventurous life they are exposed to.

In store for Higher studies

Furtherance of education should too, be acclimatised as a purpose for more flexible work schedules. Millennials pursue higher education, including diplomas and Masters programs more often than generations prior to them, and flexible work hours allow them to manage their studies while working alongside. This has become a popular career choice amongst Gen Y, who prefer to educate themselves and gain work experience to enhance their practical and theoretical knowledge together.

A flexible work schedule does not specifically apply to full-time jobs, but to part-time and freelance jobs as well. Picking the hours which are best suited to an individual allows them to give their best to whatever task they must do, and this phenomenon is gaining much momentum amongst the youth of today. In the meantime, more and more people will convince their employers to incorporate flexibility into operations.
